THE FOURTH WALL - AN EXHIBITION OF PERFORMANCE PHOTOGRAPHY
The magic of a live performance exists in that moment alone, and over the years, no medium has captured this essence of theatre better than photography. With lights, platform and people being the vital elements for theatre and photography, the Thespo X exhibition brings together both these art forms in the The Fourth Wall.
The exhibition is a group show of four photographers – Rafeeq Ellias, Madhusudhan Gadakari, Siddharth Siva and Meenal Agarwal. Each photographer documents through his work, the life of the artiste and the essence of a performance. Each photographer’s work represents an integral aspect of theatre that spans across time and genres.
While Rafeeq Ellias’ photographs encapsulate the rigorous training and precision of ballet, Madhusudhan Gadakari’s work documents the frenzy of Tarantula Tanzi, a play performed by Theatre Group in 1980’s. Siddharth Siva’s performers evolve from a veil of black, captured on stage at the peak of their performance, while Meenal Agarwal’s candid photographs catch individuals transform into actors in the greenroom.
The photographs have been curated by Mathieu Foss.
Foss is a Paris based art photography curator who was one of the founding members of trade fair Paris Photo. He has been promoting shutterbugs for a year in Mumbai and is the cofounder of Foss-Gandi, the Mumbai representation of Tasveer, a network of photography galleries operating in Indian cities.
